dirty door with choco-nuts; glass for ice at two. Just California Dreamin'.
What-a shack-a-lak.
Bull's under sofa. See me in the mirror? That's how you know it's serious.
Gun's downstairs on the alabaster tray. It's all the sea coast way.
Cozy on the beach with the sand colored hair. A long way off out there.
Tell me crazy; what people say. But, I'm not checking. Alone.
Outta there. Goin alone. Out like here is the place to leave.
Checkin' out alone. Rusted out car. Weasel's battered techno blocks. Back yard and busted glass. Oak's in play.
Voices. Sayin and sayin. Telling and how. Doin and ok I'm up. Noon n' all. That's all. Right? Cali dreamin.
Eyes shut wide. To golden light. Sutter street, Montgomery far away. Cavern's crazy height. And I, 'cause it all, on the tray. She say stay!

good enough already! (semi-fictionalized)
The once-and-future legendary restaurant scene in San Francisco [a semi-fictionalized, mostly true retelling of something that actually happened to me in the city whose namesake is St. Francis of Assisi] - My personal story goes like this: Decades ago, I was sitting in the Starbucks (now closed) that used to exist near 18th street and Castro. The table I was at (alone) was close enough for me to overhear a discussion between two men. Apparently they were working on a big project to restore the movie: Vertigo! (It has been beautifully remastered and you have to see it!)
One of the men noticed I was listening in. (I've never been good at the art of subtlety). To put it mildly, I was woefully under-employed at that time of my life. (Could I even call it that?!) The man said to me: You have to act and plan over the long-term. Short-term thinking gets you no-where. Anything worthwhile takes time. We've been working on this for years (their restoration project), and, it's going to be fantastic. We are willing to put the time into it. (So remember, it's been awhile. But it went something like that.)
Of course, dispensing advice like this assumes the recipient has some control over his economic hard-realities, and, also, that he even has the resources to dream big (all the while living small!) - Tangentially, the scene of that iconic movie, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, that comes to mind (because it has something to do with food, or the promise of food): was the famous restaurant called Earnie's. - link -
The famous Ernie's, in business for 61 years until it closed in 1995, was at 847 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. How crazy and unplanned life is as events unfold in Vertigo. (The movie)
Life imitates art. Vertigo can be a wonderful medicine for hunger (literal or figurative). Scottie (played by James Stewart) spies on an acquaintance's wife (Kim Novak), as he has been hired out as a private investigator. Even big-name stars have to pay the bills. None of the exciting things that happened in the movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock happened to me (and thank god!) We each have our fortunes and misfortunes. We each have our conditions (psychological and otherwise). Hitchcock understood this, I am sure!
I don't lecture total strangers in public. (Starbucks, in the Castro.) Some of us have less than optimal economic realities. (I probably looked rather forlorn at the time, although, I don’t think I felt it.) Life happens. (That’s the point!) I pretended to be stone deaf while sipping my beverage, the advice washing over me like the sounds of so many chattering birds in a park setting. (I can imagine these things when necessary.)
What would St. Francis of Assisi think about, and finally do, for the homeless persons one can still encounter sleeping on the sidewalks, assuming one cares to look. I empathize, that's my point. Yes, most of my big dreams, remained dreams. But, at least I can dream while knowing what I see with my own eyes. I am the beneficiary of my own good advice (kept to myself) and that has always been good enough.
