*** Nothing like Paris

With typical élan Marshal Ney took charge of the firing-squad with the words:

"Soldiers, when I give the command to fire, fire straight at my heart.  It will be my last order to you.  I protest against my condemnation.  I have fought over 100 battles for France and never against her --soldiers fire !"

On 15 June 1815, Napoleon appointed Ney commander of the left wing of the Army of the North and on the following day, after a night of torrential rain Ney found himself facing the allied armies of Europe on the glutinous fields of Waterloo. -- When the French monarchy was restored after Napoleon's downfall it was inevitable that there would be reprisals, and arrested on August 3rd, 1815, Marshal Ney was first incarcerated in the Conciergerie and later taken to the Palace of the Luxembourg under guard. -

FROM: Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises.

"He's decided he hasn't lived enough. I knew it would happen when he went to New York."

The sort of healthy conceit that he had when he returned from America early in the spring was gone. Then he had been sure of his work, only with these personal longings for adventure. Now the sureness was gone.

There were a few people inside at the bar, and outside, alone, sat Harvey Stone. He had a pile of saucers in front of him, and he needed a shave.

Then after a while it was better and I lay in bed and listened to the heavy trams go by and way down the street, and then I went to sleep.

"You oughtn't to drink pernod if you're sick." - "Nobody ever lives their life all the way up except bull-fighters."

"Oh, Bret! Brett!" the little Greek portrait-painter, who called himself a duke, and whom everybody called Zizi, pushed up to her. "I got something fine to tell you."

And then Zizi introduces Lady Ashley to Count Mippipopolous. Lady Ashley, who is also known as Brett, says "How do you do?"

Georgette made a joke, smiled, and showed her bad teeth while drinking a bottle of wine with Jacob Barnes. She was the poule that evening. This would be Paris, in a restaurant.

"No, I don't like Paris. It's expensive and dirty." - Mademoiselle Hobin.

"Nothing happens to me. I walked alone all one night and nothing happened except a bicycle cop stopped me and asked to see my papers." - "Don't you like Paris?" - Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises.

After Napoleon's defeat by the Sixth Coalition in 1814, Ney pressured the emperor to abdicate and pledged his allegiance to the restored Bourbon monarchy.
